Since Russia launched a full-scale military invasion on February 24, 2022, millions of people have had to seek refuge outside Ukraine. An estimated 30-40% of those fleeing are children under the age of 14, many unaccompanied or separated from their caregivers. In total, more than 80% of the refugees are women, adolescents, girls, and boys. The war in Ukraine continues to take a heavy toll on the lives of millions of women and girls, from increased risks of gender-based violence, sexual exploitation, and abuse to the loss of crucial livelihoods and rising poverty levels. Przemysl, with 60,000 inhabitants, is 7 km from Medyka, one of the border crossings with Ukraine, and that is why it became a starting point for other destinations within Poland or the EU.
